Sonoma State University Economic Professor and Redwood Credit Union Board Member Dr. Robert Eyler joins us on the show provide the latest national economic update and what it all means for credit unions, as we slowly emerge and start to re-open.

Here's what we asked him:

• What is the economic situation in our country right now with stimulus funds, payment protection programs, unemployment, re-opening process, etc.?
• America seems to be number 1 in everything COVID right now — not the number 1’s you want to be: COVID cases, unemployment, debt, relief payments, etc. What’s your take on this ranking?
• What are other countries doing (economically) that perhaps we should emulate?
• Let’s connect the dots to credit unions. How are they doing in relation to all that is happening?
• What advice do you have for them as we begin the long process of re-opening?
• Any specific dates to be aware regarding goals or milestones on a successful path back?

One of the many takeaways in this conversation with Robert dealt with the give and take of credit unions not making as much money because of low, low interest rates (good for the member, however), but the inevitable staff restructuring because of the expedited advent of digital services/capabilities discovered during the shutdown.

​Dr. Robert Eyler bio
Dr. Robert Eyler is Dean of the School of Extended and International Education at Sonoma State University. Dr. Eyler is Professor of Economics and Director of the Center for Regional Economic Analysis at Sonoma State University, where he has been teaching since 1995. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis in 1998. He earned a B.A. in Economics at CSU, Chico in 1992. Dr. Eyler also serves on the board of directors of Redwood Credit Union, a $2.3 billion nonprofit financial cooperative.
