There's something good brewing in the northwest and this time it isn't coffee. It's credit unions and their growing popularity and economic impact on the area. To get all the details, Northwest Credit Union Association President/CEO Troy Stang joined us "live" outside the Washington state capitol in Olympia.
Troy revealed the latest findings from an independent study (ECONorthwest) documenting credit unions’ economic impacts in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. Overall, they found that northwest credit unions delivered a $7.8 billion boost to the states' economies -- with 7.3 million consumers in the region belonging to a credit union (roughly 55% marketshare). Troy added that the northwest credit unions’ economic impact is comparable to many large universities and companies. He also discussed the effect credit union jobs have had in the area -- and, ultimately, why it's important to share this information with elected officials. Great talk with Troy about the incredible strides NWCUA and credit unions have made in the northwest. We also asked him what's the secret sauce to credit unions' success in this area. Find out in our conversation -- and let us know your thoughts. ![]()
PenFed EVP of Consumer Banking John Kelly joined us on the program to discuss why PenFed implemented and launched VISA's ‘tap-to-pay’ credit and debit cards for its global membership.
John explained how their tap-to-pay credit and debit cards work for members worldwide, as well as how many members are using them so far, the significance of this technology for PenFed and its members, goals for PenFed using this tap-to-pay technology, and advice he would give to other credit unions about adopting tap-to-pay or contactless payments. Pretty cool stuff here, so check it out and let us know your thoughts. ![]()
In part 3 of 3, CRMNext CEO Joe Salesky visits us to share his final thoughts on how Amazon Prime Credit Union could become a reality in 2019. In this episode, Joe explains how credit unions can overcome a major move like this from just about any technology company/retailer.
He boils it down to relationships and empathy -- two things credit unions do very well that the big retailers don't, no matter how cool the tech is. Lots more in this episode for sure, so check it out and let us know your thoughts. ![]()
With technology driving nearly every aspect of our lives more and more these days, is it fair to ask from our industry: Are credit unions becoming technology companies?
We invited Best Innovation Group CEO/Founder John Best to comment on this inquiry since it's a significant thread that runs through his book: "Breaking Digital Gridlock." Many credit unions today are embarking on their own digital transformation journeys to answer the evolving needs of their members. As a result, are many are looking like fintechs themselves? Check out John's analysis of what's happening with today's credit unions and their immersion in technology to help enhance their relevancy. |
