Phil DuPree, CRO at Origence, joined us in the Studio Lounge for an Origence performance report that entailed more than 2.1 million loans were funded through Origence platforms, totaling $59.2 billion in 2023. Phil added that more than 75% of these loans were funded digitally through Origence's SmartFund solution.

Lou Grilli, Senior Innovation Strategist at PSCU/Co-op Solutions, stopped by the Studio Lounge to share open banking opportunities for credit unions.

First, Lou explained the two pieces of open banking:

allowing third-party access to your financial data
a user interface, most likely in your mobile or online banking, that shows who you gave access to, what kinds of data you gave access to and allows you to renew that access, or stop that access

Lou also discussed data sharing and how it is done today, mostly via screen scraping. And in some cases, it does work. Screen scraping is a funny description. For screen scraping, you give your username and password to the third party, and the application kinda knows the layout of your online banking, logs in as you, and knows which screens to grab the data from. There are many reasons why screen scraping should be eliminated.

Lastly, he talked about why open banking is a topic that credit unions need to hear about, as the CFPB late last year issued for comments, a processed rule making, the Personal Financial Data Rights, which is simply called Open Banking, and refer to the rulemaking as 1033 – named for the section of the Dodd Frank Act that gives the CFPB the authority to impose a mandate.
