SRM’s Vice President, Marketing and Communications Neil Dougherty stopped by to share three mid-year trends financial institutions should watch -- especially in the tech space.

Neil discussed each one in great detail, as well as the significance of each trend for credit unions:
  • Cryptocurrency -- Cryptocurrency has been top of mind for the entire financial services industry this year. Several financial institutions, particularly credit unions, launched buy/sell/hold crypto capabilities in recent months in partnership with fintech firms providing the supporting custodial services, as required by regulators’ current stances.
  • Buy Now, Pay Later -- The Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) space has encountered a similar trajectory to crypto. Some of the steepest drops in valuation have been among BNPL-focused fintech firms in the US and abroad. At the same time, use cases are expanding. With recent inflation, standard household purchases increasingly look like logical BNPL candidates as consumers continue spending despite inflation concerns.
  • Regulatory developments -- Federal agencies have been managing requests for comments and information on various issues, such as the Presidential Executive Order that seeks clarity on digital assets and calls for reports from numerous agencies by December.

To wrap up, Neil shared a few other peripheral items we should have on our radars heading into 2023.

Backbase’s Senior Vice President, Strategic Business Development Vincent Bezemer joined us on the show to discuss how credit unions are working to meet the needs of younger members through digital innovation based on the recent BAI “The Top Banking Trends and Challenges for 2022” report.

The big takeaway from the report and our conversation Vince is that less than half of Gen Z and Millennials used the same financial institution as their parents in 2021. That’s a significant drop compared to 61% of Gen Z and 54% of millennials in 2020. Vince explained what this means for financial institutions' near- and long-term future.

He also outlined steps that financial institutions need to take to properly meet the digital expectations of their younger audience and why creating a single, unified, and integrated system that removes barriers between different functions is a key in advancing a credit union’s digital efforts to attract the younger generations.

In addition, Vince shared how building a digital platform allows for greater customer engagement and retention – including increasing the speed of customer onboarding.

He wrapped up our talk with some tips and insights into the metrics that can be used to track for success and personalize the customer experience further.

Yet, another takeaway-laden talk with Vince on a very timely topic for credit unions that will certainly affect their future in gaining new members. Check it out and let us know your thoughts. And be sure to watch the entire interview below for all the details.
