Phil Fowler, Chief Experience Officer at AltaOne Federal Credit Union, joined us on the show to talk about the credit union working with Veep to roll-out its new earned wage access (EWA) solution for members called AnyTimePay.

Phil explained that AnyTimePay lets members access their earned wages early, helping those living paycheck to paycheck avoid predatory payday loans. He described how members could enroll via Pinwheel to verify payroll and direct deposit, or through a history of check deposits, with repayment handled automatically through ACH batches and NACHA files.

Phil shared that AnyTimePay had been live with a test group for about six weeks, including 40 employees who had already used it, and that small businesses in their communities were interested in offering it to help with employee retention. He emphasized that the credit union’s goals were to grow membership, support small businesses, reduce reliance on payday loans, and provide a product that members would talk about in their communities.

Canvas Credit Union’s Vice President of Community Engagement Malcolm Johnson stopped by the show to discuss how the credit union's financial education efforts have benefited members, staff, and the surrounding communities it serves.

Specifically, Malcolm shared that Canvas' Community Involvement Department has been providing financial education for over a decade, offering more than 350 classes annually with over 10,000 attendees, serving students from high schools and middle schools through adults aged 50 and older.

Malcolm talked about how the department's efforts position Canvas as a community leader and help introduce younger generations to credit unions, noting they are particularly focused on college campuses to attract younger members.

Malcolm also highlighted their current priority of working with school districts to support Colorado's new House Bill 25-1192, which requires all students to receive financial education by 2030. He advised other credit unions to be genuine in their efforts and to collaborate with other organizations when expanding financial education programs.

Suncoast Credit Union CFO Ben Lemoine joined the show the provide an update on the Launch Credit Union merger, now that the merger has been approved by Launch members and the business move is official as of September 1, 2026.

Now that they are on the next stages of the merger, Ben explained that very little changes for members immediately, including the same accounts, branches, and staff. He emphasized that the merger was driven by cultural alignment rather than financial necessity, with both organizations sharing similar financial health, values, and missions.

Ben highlighted that Launch members received benefits including access to a larger branch network, expanded wealth management services, and a $15 million special dividend, while no merger-related job losses will occur.

The integration process will continue through mid-2027, with Suncoast focusing on clear communication, employee support, and systems integration while maintaining "no change but change" for members during the transition.

Shane Butcher, Executive Director at Optiri, stopped by the show to share his expertise on what credit unions can do to upgrade their security amongst today's rampant fraud threats.

Specifically, Shane emphasized the importance of conducting regular vendor reviews, performing penetration testing both internally and externally, and updating encryption algorithms to prepare for quantum computing threats expected between 2029 and 2034.

Speaking of quantum, he discussed how quantum computing could break current encryption and enable "harvest now, decrypt later" attacks where data is captured and decrypted when quantum computing becomes viable.

Shane also highlighted the growing risks from AI-based security threats and recommended that credit unions adopt AI-driven security tools and consider post-quantum cryptographic algorithms. 

Lastly, he covered both immediate quick wins like multi-factor authentication and incident response planning, as well as longer-term strategic considerations for fighting emerging threats with advanced AI technologies.

Nuuvia’s new CEO Marcell King stopped by the show to share his reaction to being appointed as the organization's new leader, as well as his take on Trump Accounts (where credit unions fit in) and the state of youth banking in the credit union industry today.

Marcell explained that Nuuvia's product features are designed for children aged 6-18, including financial education tools, chore/allowance systems, parental lending modules, and debit cards with parent-controlled spending capabilities.

He discussed how credit unions can use these tools to attract younger members and compete with fintech companies, noting that Nuuvia currently serves 53 clients, double the number from the previous year.

Marcell shared success stories including Desert Financial's 32% increase in youth accounts opened since launch with Nuuvia and highlighted the economic benefits of youth banking, with interchange revenue covering implementation costs.

He also touched on Trump Accounts for children born between 2025-2028, though Marcell noted current limitations on where these funds can be held.

Looking ahead, Marcell mentioned plans to develop senior banking solutions to address growing fraud concerns in that demographic, while continuing to expand Nuuvia's youth banking offerings to help credit unions replace aging member bases.
