CU Strategic Planning’s President Stacy Augustine and CDCFC Community Development Manager Chip Serna joined us on the show to share their announcement regarding the relaunch of their in-person Community Development Summits -- which are facilitated in-person meetings between credit unions, local nonprofits, etc., to help build and enhance collaborations between members, credit unions, and their communities.

Specifically, Stacy and Chip discussed the live summits are half-day facilitated meetings bringing together credit union leadership with nonprofit organizations, public agencies, and workforce development groups to identify local needs and develop collaborative solutions.

Stacy explained that the events help credit unions understand community needs to develop products around those needs, create strategic partnerships, and increase awareness of the credit union difference, while Chip emphasized the importance of making these summits ongoing rather than one-time events, allowing credit unions to consistently address changing community needs.

They also covered who should consider hosting these summits, with timing considerations around vacations and local events, and highlighted how the response from community-based organizations is often surprising when they see credit unions willing to redesign products to meet community needs.

Michele Raneri, VP and head of U.S. research and consulting at TransUnion, stopped by the show to share key findings from the organization's Q2 2026 Credit Industry Insights Report (CIIR) — showing data from the report delivering a compelling story about consumer credit expansion and market stability.

Some of those key data findings in this quarter's report Michele addressed include:
  • Total consumer bankcard balances increased 4.4% YoY to $1.14 trillion, while lenders returned to a growth-oriented strategy.
  • Total credit lines associated with new accounts in the first quarter of 2026 rose 20.9% YoY as lenders increased both acquisition volumes and opened credit lines across all risk tiers.
  • Bankcard originations rose 11.8% YoY to 20.6M, marking a sixth consecutive quarter of growth and a Q1 record
  • Consumer-level bankcard delinquencies edged higher in Q2 2026, with consumers 90+ DPD rising to 2.26%.
  • For personal installment loans: Lenders are extending credit to more consumers, particularly in subprime, while maintaining underwriting discipline. Subprime borrowers and accounts grew 18.4% and 20.5% YoY, respectively, even as the size of the average new subprime loan fell 6.8%.

Based on these highlights, Michele shared her insights on the big picture of what's currently going on with today's consumers, adding this positive quote she addressed, as well:

“While affordability pressures continue to weigh on many households, consumers appear to be managing credit obligations with relative discipline, as evidenced by modest growth in non-mortgage minimum payments and generally stable balance-level delinquency rates. Although some consumers may be experiencing financial challenges, the broader credit picture suggests that balance growth has generally remained aligned with consumers’ ability to service their debt.”

Lastly, she talked about what the credit unions’ role is here to help keep their members on the right path economically and out of trouble credit-wise.

Apologies for my bad hair day, too.
