#251: Why 'immediacy' is key in today's CU auto lending market: CU Direct's Tony Boutelle explains...

2/17/2014

It's no secret that auto lending has taken the "front seat" in many credit unions' portfolios as of late. CU Direct can attest to that trend, as their auto loan processing volumes are through the roof -- well into the billions of dollars. We invited CU Direct's President & CEO Tony Boutelle on the program not only to discuss his company's 2013 numbers, but we also talked about why this is happening and how it's affecting credit unions today. In addition, Tony provides a few juicy nuggets of advice for credit unions to use to maintain or exceed their current lending performances. Enjoy!

#250: To stand out amongst the noise, create a 'complete' member experience. On the Mark Strategies' Mark Arnold tells you how...

2/13/2014

From the boardroom to the bathroom to the drive-thru and even online, it is vital for credit unions to create a memorable member experience in any environment to enhance their brand. Most credit unions have the online and mobile services needed in today's ever-demanding market. But what are they doing to create a user experience that will compel members to talk about those awesome products and services to their friends and family?

To part the waters and show us the way, we invited On the Mark Strategies President Mark Arnold on the show. Mark reinforces his comprehensive member experience message reminding us why it is so important in our increasingly competitive FI arena for credit unions to stand out. He also discusses 2014 marketing trends of which to be aware and the importance of including video in your communication plans.

In addition, we chatted about the pitfalls of social media. Yes, it's revolutionized the way we communicate and interact today, but credit unions need to be wary of jumping on any new network that comes along. It's a trap and a time suck. Mark consistently tells credits unions that social media is very important but to focus, focus, focus in this area. And he shows us how to do just that -- along with a lot more. Always a memorable experience with Mr. Mark Arnold. Enjoy!

#249: Good news with regulations? What? PolicyWorks Jeff Andersen delivers three ways CUs will benefit...

2/12/2014

According to PolicyWorks Regulatory Counsel Jeff Andersen, there is actually some good news when it comes to the regulations that have plagued the lives of credit unions as of late. Really? Has a certain place we all don't want to go to frozen over?

Just hang on. In this episode Jeff explains three areas where credit unions will benefit with the most recent regs. We also discuss more rules coming down the turnpike in 2015 and what they mean for CUs. Does it ever end? Probably not. But Jeff puts things in perspective for credit unions dealing with the latest compliance issues. He also lists three ways they can manage the current deluge. As Jeff sums it up, "The hits keep on coming."

#248: How to properly crash CUNA's GAC with The Cooperative Trust's James Marshall...

2/5/2014

When comes to crashing CUNA's Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington, D.C., each year, nobody does it better than The Cooperative Trust's James Marshall. Actually, he better because he's the leader of this bright-eyed group looking to know all things credit union. So we invited James on the program to get an inside scoop on how to do this feat properly to gain the necessary knowledge and exposure for this group of young professionals to pass on the CU word to their Gen Y peers.

James tells us that this year The Cooperative Trust has a record number of attendees "crashing" the CUNA party, so be on the look out for a much larger group this year. I'm sure they will be hard to miss. James also provides us with the goals The Cooperative Trust has in attending this year's GAC, along with all the events they will go to and people they will meet. So if you see these young individuals, go up to them and start talking a little CU shop. They are sponges eager to learn and pass on the word to their friends. We gotta get younger to sustain our success.

And many thanks to James for staying up late in England to conduct this international interview. Enjoy!

#247: Co-Ops, Callahan's, and Credit Unions with Chip Filson...

2/3/2014

I always enjoy interviewing Callahan and Associate's Chip Filson, now the leader for Coops4Change, because he's so incredibly smart. He's also seen just about everything in the credit union industry during his legendary career. Couple his knowledge and experience and you have a walking CU resource like none other. Subsequently, if you ever have the opportunity to talk a little cooperative shop with Chip, don't pass it up -- and I didn't!

We invited Chip on the program to discuss the latest happenings with his Coops4Change, along with plans for 2014. Chip also provided a few interesting takes on the changing faces at the NCUA and what those changes mean for credit unions. Lastly, we discussed the state of the industry from his perspective and where we're headed.

Oh yeah, almost forgot -- please watch to the end because Chip reveals some pretty astounding stats on military credit union lending and student lending. These are the messages credit unions should be hammering home. Check it out!
