In this episode we are joined by The Foundation's Director Gigi Hyland, as she discusses the organization's latest project: "7 Cooperative Principles" (with a big thank you to Corporate One FCU, as well). This short video on the cooperative principles allows credit unions to leverage with their staff, members and community. The animated video discusses the benefits of what it means for a credit union to be a cooperative and goes into the 7 cooperative principles in brief detail.

Gigi says the video is serves as a reminder to our industry that credit unions are indeed cooperatives at their core and it is meant to be shared over and over again. Hence, the posting of the video on our site (see below). Enjoy the chat with Gigi and go to The Foundation's website and check it out -- and pass it on!

#447: Keesler Federal Credit Union's Tammy Williams Relives Hurricane Katrina...

8/28/2015

Credit Unions for Kids: Shop for Miracles
A couple years ago I produced a video white paper for CUNA Technology Council on disaster recovery and business continuity planning. I had the honor of interviewing some truly extraordinary folks for this project who experienced mega-natural disasters such has Hurricane Sandy, Hurricane Katrina and the Moore, Oklahoma tornado.

Since this is the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, I thought I would delve into the archives and re-post the interview with Keesler's Tammy Williams to let you all listen to her first-hand account of that terrible storm -- and how the credit union survived, helping others survive, too. A compelling story from a wonderful woman who kept her sense of humor through it all. Enjoy!

And thank you to CUNA Technology Council for allowing me to produce this project.

Every time I see CUinsight's Randy Smith, he has the biggest grin on his face. I call him the happiest person in the industry -- and why not? CUinsight has grown into quite the content juggernaut for credit unions, and it seems there's no end in sight.

So we invited Randy on the show to talk a little bit about his site's evolution, as CUinsight just went through another website update -- which is pretty cool, resembling ESPN's new interface along with many other trend-setting sites. There's good reason for the upgrade. Randy tells us there is so much content running through his site now that he had to "slim it down" and make it more efficient.

But there are also a few lessons in here for credit unions: keeping pace with the ever-changing online world, testing new delivery channels, and listening to your audience to meet their evolving needs, as well. Check it out and enjoy!

Get ready for another "fintech" adventure, as our friend and financial technology expert John Best, president and founder of Best Innovation Group (BIG), crashes our virtual studio -- guitar and all.  John is actually a very good guitar player being in a band for many years and says he plays everyday as an outlet from his intense focus on financial technology trends, issues, and breakthroughs for credit unions.

In part 1 of our chat (after our brief Van Halen tangent), John talks about how holograms may be the MSRs of the future -- along with 5G high-def video playing a similar role for credit unions, Minecraft being the new digital Legos, Hololens demo at E3 2015, and the latest updates at CU Wallet. There's so much more in this episode, as there always is with John -- adding Apple Pay and PayPal perspectives to the discussion, as well.

Always a mind-bending experience with John. So enjoy -- and stay tuned for part 2 next week when we address Apple Watch potential, why CUs are the "ring to rule them all," MCX, and more on CU Wallet and holograms.

Best Innovation Group
Credit Unions for Kids' Senior Director Joe Dearborn joins us to talk about their upcoming promotion called "Shop for Miracles." Shop for Miracles is the newest Credit Unions for Kids' national campaign. This one-day fundraiser takes place on October 15, 2015 as an exciting and innovative way to celebrate the World Council of Credit Union's International Credit Union Day at your credit union.

The campaign's idea is simple: Each time your members use their credit union issued debit and/or credit card, your credit union will donate $0.25 (or other designated amount) on International Credit Union Day to your local Children's Miracle Network Hospital. Check it out and sign up to participate!
