Each Spring, Credit Union Journal declares its "call for entries" for its annual Best Practices Awards that can cover anything from shared branching and remote deposit to online billpay and operations efficiencies. We visited with Credit Union Journal's Publisher Frank Diekmann to see what the magazine is looking for in winning entries, requirements, and deadlines. Frank also shared a few interesting examples of winners from previous years.
This is a great issue as it provides a peek at popular service-type trends positively impacting the industry right now, while setting the table for the future. Deadline for entries is July 1, 2011 and winners will be announced in the November 28, 2011 issue. Good luck to everybody and enjoy the program! Andy has developed a unique training method where he uses movie heros and their trainer characters (ex. Yoda and Luke Skywalker) as examples and transfers that entertaining storyline to credit union employees in training. It's this innovative teaching that makes FORUM's staff excel at member service -- and much of it starts with Andy's classes. I assure you, you will never look at training the same way again. Enjoy this fun and informative conversation with Andy Janning.

I had a blast talking with BizKids' Executive Producer Jeannine Glista about her highly entertaining and informative financial show for kids. The award-winning program -- it was just nominated again for an Emmy this month -- provides kids with hilarious parodies from pop culture such as "Donald Rump's The Intern" (Donald Trump), "The Calculator" ("The Terminator"), Monty Python, and Frankenstein Comes Up with Cool Online Biz. BizKids needs to present these funny ideas to get their smart money message across to a tough audience. Teaching kids about money can be challenge, but BizKids seems to pull it off nicely. Not only are they fun to watch, they are loaded with practical information told by kids who have experienced being in debt, starting a business, getting a job, budgeting, and more. And best of all, this show is supported by credit unions. Great connection! Enjoy the interview with Jeannine!

CUES Maria Kinney, who has been in charge of the awards for the past three or four years, gives us the inside scoop on what the judges look for in each entry, deadlines, nominee requirements, categories, etc. Maria even provides us with some of her favorite awards in years past, as well as marketing trends she spotted over the years. So take a few minutes and check out what your credit union needs to do to enter this much-anticipated marketing contest. Deadline to enter is May 27, 2011.
Visit: 2011 CUES Golden Mirror Awards What does "mo-cial" mean? Well, if you attended FinovateSpring 2011 in San Francisco (May 10-11), you'd know. More than 850 attendees watched 64 tech vendors demo their products and services on stage and on the big screen. I've had Finovate co-founder Eric Mattson on the show a couple of times discussing his conference format, where vendors only get 7 minutes to demo their products or they get gonged off the stage. Talk about pressure. But it makes for a tight and quick format that everybody seems to enjoy. I interviewed many of the vendors and a few credit union folks to get their take on the show. Enjoy the interview montage!
