IMM/eSign

Our annual blooper reel is back after a two-year hiatus -- and we couldn't be happier, and a little nervous, to bring you 2022's bobbles, botches, and bungles during many of our CUbroadcast interviews this past year.

Yes, we all take our jobs very seriously. Afterall, credit unions are in the business of changing lives for the better financially in many, many ways. And we are honored to bring you these stories on a daily basis for the last 12 years.

At the same time, we like to have a bit of fun to balance out our professional lives -- and credit union people, as we all know, are a fun bunch to be around.

So we hope you enjoy this year's blooper reel that is loaded with 99.9% of my mess ups. But every now and then, our guests step up to the plate and make us laugh, as well. We are excited to provide you with this holiday present/production to enjoy over the next few weeks, as we take a short break to recharge our batteries for 2023.

And, lastly, a huge thank you to all our guests for coming on the show and sharing their extraordinary stories that ultimately push the credit union industry forward. We also want to thank our valued sponsors for allowing us to deliver these productions to you everyday. If not for their efforts in supporting our channel, we wouldn't be able to share all these episodes over the years -- more than 6,000 episodes to date.

Most importantly, we can't thank you, our viewers, enough for watching and supporting our broadcast. We hope our educational interviews bring you all tons of value to better your products and services that continue to enhance your members' lives -- ultimately, making your credit unions more valuable to them, allowing you to fulfill the "people helping people" mission we all covet.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your families and friends. Have fun and be safe over the holidays -- and we'll see you in 2023!

And for those of you who missed our 2019 blooper reel, click here for some bonus entertainment.

Al Pasqual, SVP - Enterprise Risk Solutions at Sontiq, a TransUnion company, stopped by the show to share the latest news about the resurgence of check fraud and its impact on financial services today. With fewer and fewer people writing checks these days, who knew this was still a thing? According to Al, it is and it's getting worse.

Al share with us exactly what’s going on with this resurgence and what types of challenges it is posing to the financial services industry.

He also mentioned how check fraud can actually pit FIs against other FIs -- and explained how this happens.

Thankfully, there are ways financial institutions, credit unions in this case, can combat check fraud. Al shares his tips and tricks in this area.

Lastly, he shared how he sees this trend continuing in 2023.

Check it out and let us know your thoughts. And be sure to watch the entire episode below for all the details.

Peter Duffy, Managing Director at Piper Sandler, joined us on the show to share his insights on the looming battle for core deposits and its impact on a financial institution's margin. Peter shares new research findings on this topic and takes a deep dive on its significance.

Not only does Peter discuss this looming battle and its background, but he also talks about why banks will pay what they need to but won’t offer their best rate on a term sheet, as credit unions ultimately offer better rates than banks do.

He also examines the regulatory changes that occurred in 2014 — how money center banks became aggressive on core deposits. Banks had regulations that favored them, which resulted in the DNA of banks being rewired by regulation, longterm impact potentially dramatic (below economy of scale)

In addition, Peter discussed why pandemic liquidity is becoming so precious to financial institutions and what it means for FIs without scale -- forcing credit unions and their boards to address how they’re going to deal with matching market on rates.

Lastly, he addressed how boards and management will deal with this from a liquidity and earnings perspective -- with a possible ripple effect in the increased desire for more FI mergers.

Check it out and let us know your thoughts. And be sure to watch the entire episode below for all the details.

CU Strategic Planning President/CEO Stacy Augustine joined us on the show to discuss the latest CDFI Fund proposed changes, as well as CU Strategic Planning's comment letter that shared their concerns over some of the changes.

Stacy then addressed why these changes were proposed.

She also talked about CU Strategic Planning’s response stating: “…the policy objectives are laudable, however, some of the specifics of the proposal might not work toward those goals.”

There were two concerns in particular Stacy shared:
  1. Minimizing administrative burden on CDFIs while maintaining data quality and collection methods
  2. Time frame for compliance

In addition, she examined how she sees these changes affecting credit unions, admitting that 1/3 of CU Strategic Planning's credit union clients would consider ending their certification status if changes go into effect as written.

Lastly, she shared next steps in this whole proposed changes process.

Always great talking with Stacy -- especially on topics that can have significant impact on the industry. Check it out and let us know your thoughts. And be sure to watch the entire episode below for all the details.
