TED Talk -- Paul Piff: Does money make you mean?

12/20/2013

Saw this TED Talk on CU Water Cooler and thought I would share. Here's what it's about...

It's amazing what a rigged game of Monopoly can reveal. In this entertaining but sobering talk, social psychologist Paul Piff shares his research into how people behave when they feel wealthy. (Hint: badly.) But while the problem of inequality is a complex and daunting challenge, there's good news too. (Filmed at TEDxMarin.)

#237: Discover 'The Secret to Being Rich' with The Disclosures...

12/17/2013

Ever wonder what the secret to being rich is? Well, in this episode of CUbroadcast, we invited the dynamic, musical duo of The Disclosures, Chad Helminak and Christopher Morris, on the program to find out. Actually, it's easier than you think -- and Chad and Chris cover their money-wise messages on their second CD entitled: "The Secret to Being Rich". (It's their first CD geared toward kids.)

The CD's title has a double meaning of which we discuss with them -- which is important because their 10-song collection is geared toward elementary school kids. It's never too early to learn about finance and The Disclosures put it all to music with such titles as:

"Thank My Piggy Bank"
"Won't You Be My Money Buddy"
"I Want, I Need"
"The Tale of Kidd Silver"

So sit back and enjoy our chat with Chad and Chris -- along with a tune or two, a couple of credit union guys looking to make a financial literacy difference in this world through their unique and fun music. Enjoy!

#236: How to help your members combat online shopping scams with Tracesecurity's Jim Stickley...

12/12/2013

It's the holidays and millions more shoppers are going to be buying presents online. With the ever increasing influx of shoppers means there's also an ever increasing influx of online scams out there. To combat this serious threat, we invited Tracesecurity's Jim Stickley on the show to provide a little real-world guidance for credit unions and their members to follow.

Jim's side project called Stickley on Security provides helpful videos to visitors regarding numerous security issues: credit card scams, ID theft, phishing attacks, mobile banking security, and a lot more. In this episode, we not only discuss online shopping scams to be aware of, we also address the growing concern over cyber spying. Jim provides some easy-to-follow steps on how to combat this creepy threat, as well.

So before you go online to buy that Red Ryder BB gun ("A Christmas Story") for your son or daughter, check out this episode to get a few quick tips on safe shopping. Check it out.

#235: Wrapping up a successful 2013 in Maui with CUES Chuck Fagan...

12/10/2013

We are on the lovely island of Maui covering the 2013 CUES Directors Conference and we ran into of all people CUES President and CEO Chuck Fagan. Chuck had a few minutes to spare, so we sat down and discussed the show's impact on attendees -- along with the conference attendance doubling in size from last year. Not bad.

We also discussed Chuck's take on credit unions' performance in 2013 and what the industry can look forward to in 2014. Lastly, we touched on how life has been since taking the reins of CUES one year ago. Always a pleasure talking shop with Chuck Fagan. Enjoy the show!

#234: Exploring the credit union 'millennials' dilemma with CCUL's Diana Dykstra...

12/4/2013

Always an uplifting experience talking all things credit union with California & Nevada Credit Union League President and CEO Diana Dykstra. As we do every year around this time, we invite Diana and her positive personality to come on the show and talk a little CU shop. And did we ever this time addressing one of today's biggest issues credit unions are experiencing -- attracting the millennials who will soon be coming into their financial prime before we know it. A kind of credit union member succession plan, if you will.

Diana does a beautiful job dissecting this issue, along with myriad of other topics we put on the table. Don't miss this episode. Some great advice here. Enjoy!
