Joel Rickman, SVP of Verification Services at Equifax, stopped by the Studio Lounge to discuss a very timely topic right now: “Are Recent Grads Underestimated During the Loan Process?”

Joel talked about what is happening in the industry today, and how risk-averse credit unions can continue to grow their portfolios -- even with borrowers (recent graduates) who may be score-averse.

He also discussed how students and recent grads may not have had the opportunity to build credit, so they may have a thin or no credit file that could be at a disadvantage when applying for loans, which means credit unions looking to alternative data to qualify them for a loan. That said, Joel addressed how alternative data sets can help credit unions say “yes” to more consumers (even the thin file ones) and expand opportunities for lifetime members.

Lastly, he shared how people’s lives change quickly, and so does the labor market, so how can credit unions get the most up-to-date information about a member to make educated lending decisions?

A truly takeaway-laden talk with Joel on how credit unions can work with today's graduates, helping them make that transition in life from student to professional. Check it out and let us know your thoughts. And be sure to watch the entire episode below for all the details.
