Silvur’s Founder/CEO Rhian Horgan and MSU Federal Credit Union’s President/CEO April Clobes joined us on the show to talk retirement. Not their retirement, but their members' retirement plans and how credit unions (MSU FCU in this case) can help them navigate today's Social Security and Medicare issues -- especially in an election year. It's yet another opportunity for credit unions to step up and become these soon-to-be or current retirees' primary financial institution.

We started out the conversation discussing the current issues that surround Social Security and Medicare, focusing on Social Security's existence in 10 years and Medicare's huge expense for retirees on a fixed income. Rhian shared her expertise in this area, questioning that these programs worked well in their beginnings, but are they working today?

April talked about why credit unions should care about these programs and how they can step in and help members embarking in the retirement stage of life -- as well as how they can beat the AARP marketing machine and deliver better choices to members.

They both explained how their two organizations are working together to manage/mitigate this issue for members, and, since GAC is around the corner, what’s the message for credit unions on this topic, as they hike the hill in D.C.

Check out Rhian's recent blog post for GAC attendees on this topic: "2024 CUNA GAC Hill Hike Primer."

A very timely topic here with April and Rhian -- and how credit unions can be an ideal resource to help members in this area. Check it out and let us know your thoughts. And be sure to watch the entire episode below the show notes.

Mark Mrva, Senior Director for SRM, and Connor Heaton, Vice President - Intelligent Automation and AI at SRM, stopped by the show to share highlights from their recent white paper release: “Focus on Operational Agility to Achieve Success in 2024.”

Mark focused on explaining why credit unions should continuously monitor their expenses and Connor focused on how those FIs need to consider coming to terms with employing artificial intelligence.

Both Mark and Connor shared the challenges and unknowns that financial institution management teams and boards face as they are budgeting and planning for 2024, as well as pointing out growth in 2024 is expected to be slow, and an extraordinary effort will be required for FIs to meet revenue and bottom-line targets. That said, they talked about considerations that could give credit unions an edge in meeting their numbers this year.

Specifically, Mark shared:
  • Why FIs should closely scrutinize their expenses and what managers should be focusing their attention on
  • How legislation like the Durbin Amendment's e-commerce routing rules expected to impact how FIs monitor their expenses
  • Cost-control considerations that FIs should be aware of? Should inflation also be considered

Specifically, Connor discussed:
  • Things FIs should be taking note of as they plan to use AI in 2024
  • Risks and opportunities that AI presents FIs as they budget and plan for the year
  • How can credit unions can keep up with the ever-changing regulations -- especially with AI permeating the financial services landscape

Check it out and let us know your thoughts. And be sure to watch the entire episode below for all the details -- as well as downloading the full report below.
