I recently read an intriguing article on CUtoday from CUES SVP/Chief Learning Officer Christopher Stevenson entitled: "5 Steps To Connect Strategy & Leadership Development." So I called up Christopher and invited him on the show to explain himself. And that he did with great success, as we reviewed each of the five steps why they are so important to credit unions today -- especially with our industry's current leadership evolution.

Christopher also added that leadership development programs at credit unions should be saved at all costs -- even in tight budgeting times. Check it out and let us know your thoughts on this timely topic.

We recently attended the CSCU Annual Solutions Conference in Orlando, Florida, and caught up with the company's President Bob Hackney just after his presentation to the gathering's credit union attendees. We discussed some of his talk's major points, such as how mobile transactions are now exceeding branch transactions and what this milestone means for credit unions. We also touched on how Apple is the biggest in mobile payments but still slow going for adoption, the FIS digital app that will beta for CUs this summer, how nice it is not to utter EMV in every sentence anymore, and much more.

Check it out and let us know your thoughts.

It's good to see success stories from the credit union industry. One such example comes from a former CUES Next Top Credit Union Exec competition participant Alexia Mavrakes (episode #89). At the time, Alexia was Aspire Federal Credit Union's Marketing Manager, who always had an eye to achieve big things. Well now, she has launched her own leadership and succession planning  firm Dream Awake for incoming credit union leaders who are replacing many of today's retiring executives -- all with a Millennial spin.

Based on her experiences, education, and learning from seasoned leaders, Alexia believes she can show credit unions how to save money on employee acquisition and retention with her customized Leadership Acceleration & Shift Support program.

In our latest Leadership Development series, we sit down again with Cardwell's Senior Consultant and former Arkansas Federal Credit Union CEO Larry Biernacki and discuss how becoming an "irreplaceable employee" can not only be detrimental to your career but to your credit union as well. Larry provides steps to expand your knowledge base within your credit union and complements these steps with real-world examples from his career. He grew his credit union from $400 million to more than $1 billion during his tenure, so he has a bit of experience in this area that he's willing to share.

Watch our 4-part series over the next few weeks, and let us know what you think -- along with any helpful examples, as well.

#566: How Pioneer WV's Dan McGowan Engaged His Staff to Turn Around his CU...

4/19/2016

CUES Governance Leadership

Pioneer WV Federal Credit Union was on the verge of a massive downslide at the turn of the decade with employees disengaged, a lack of leadership, and members starting to leave for other FIs. It wasn't looking good and action needed to be taken quickly.

With certain collapse looming, the executive suite was overhauled bringing in fresh new talent. One of those new faces was Dan McGown, now the credit union's CEO. With new leadership in place, along with a novel outlook on how to treat and respect employees, Pioneer WV started to experience a turn around of all turn arounds.

According to Dan, it all stemmed from engaging employees and making them a part of the process, giving them a voice, incorporating accountability, and rewarding them accordingly. What resulted is a wonderful story that continues to blossom today. Watch and find out how Dan and his team turned around Pioneer WV from a fledgling FI to a powerhouse CU in the fine state of West Virginia.

Check it out and let us know what you think.
