When JetSteam Federal Credit Union President/CEO Jeanne Kucey showed up on her first day of work in 2009, the credit union was a ship not exactly headed in the right direction. Jeanne had to take some drastic steps to set a more stable course or there was a possibility that the credit union's existence may not end well.
One of the steps Jeanne took early on to return JetStream to prosperity and contribute to its communities was to become a certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) with the help of grant writing firm CU Strategic Planning. This certification would enable the credit union to apply for annual grants from the United States Treasury -- of which is has successfully received. These funds allow JetStream to develop new programs and products to help its members better their financial lives. Taking it another step, the credit union has also enabled its entire staff to become Community Development Certified Financial Counselors certified by the NCBA.
As a result -- along with numerous other measures Jeanne discusses, JetStream is soaring today, helping its members, many of whom are low income, in the Miami area (and Puerto Rico) to flourish and better their communities. An amazing turnaround story for sure. Check it out and let us know what you think.
